Dementia is not a single disease; it’s an umbrella term that covers many medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, which is similar to heart disease. Abnormal brain changes cause disorders grouped under the term “dementia”.
These changes cause a decline in thinking ability, also known as cognitive ability, so severe that it interferes with daily life and independence. They also have an impact on a person’s behavior, emotions, and relationships. People with a high genetic risk of dementia can live a healthier lifestyle and reduce their risk of the disease.
Dementia is more common as people get older (about a third of people aged 85 and over may have some form of dementia) but it is not a normal part of aging.
