Challenge: Can you count the total disappearing dots in this optical illusion? Most people cannot!

(Image source: Jackpotjoy) Do you love optical illusions that trick your mind into seeing things differently, surprising you when you finally discover the trick? If so, this classic illusion will intrigue you. What you see here is a network of blue lines – vertical, horizontal and diagonal – that intersect and intersect at various points.2Now the challenge here is to count how many dark dots there are in the picture, placed at different intersection points. Are you ready? Try counting and recording your solution when you’re done.

Why is this SO difficult?

A first look at this image will show how minimally bent this image is. It’s impossible to see all the black dots at a glance, and they seem to flicker and disappear, especially when you switch your gaze from one dot to another.

How it works

This optical illusion, powered by Jackpotjoy, works by taking advantage of the weak peripheral perception of human vision. You may only see 3-4 dots at a time. People with poor peripheral vision may only see one or two dots at a time. Technically, the image is still and not any GIF or video. That means that even though the image “doesn’t actually change,” the appearance and disappearance of the black dots you see are due to the changing perception taking place in your brain. Since your eyes cannot create a realistic image of this illusion, your brain fills in the gaps with what it expects to be out of focus based on the pattern. Therefore, your brain will miss black dots that are out of focus.

Solution

There are a total of 9 black dots in this image, placed in a predictable way. You can count correctly by focusing on one part of the image at a time and not getting confused by “did that dot just disappear and I just counted!” If you enjoyed this optical illusion, you may also be interested in checking out these stories:
