The viewer is left wondering whether the black horse in the scene is facing away from the camera or towards it due to the optical illusion created by the new storm, which turns the surrounding landscape white and snowy. What do you observe? Thousands of people are arguing over which direction a horse is going in a snowy optical illusion captured on camera during a snowstorm in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Rudnik, an American Quarter Horse, is at the center of confusion reminiscent of the online controversy over clothing colors that erupted in 2015. Alesia Willard, his owner, claimed that last year was the first time she saw Rudnik’s dark appearance against the snow. Willard uploaded a video image to Rudnik’s social media pages on January 21. The description said: “There were a few times I it’s really impossible to tell” and the text reads: “When your horse is so dark in the snow, you can’t tell if it’s walking towards you or away from you.” Since then, the TikTok video has received more than 16 million views and hundreds of users debated the horse’s path in the comments section on both the platform and Instagram. In an Instagram comment, “Jerremy Rudnik” said: “My last two brain cells were fighting until my last breath trying to figure this out.” Someone added: “The fact that I can switch back and forth between these two cells is melting my brain.” One observer said, “If you look at the snow he’s throwing with his feet, you’ll see he’s walking away,” suggesting that they already knew the solution.
You can clearly tell that Rudnik is leaving if you look very closely. The second video, titled “Optical Illusion Horse: Round 2,” was published by Willard for entertainment purposes only. It shows a close-up of Rudnik walking in the snow, creating another optical illusion. Rudnik will “forever remain a mystery”.
